In 1863, a charter from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts authorized five Jesuits of Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus to incorporate as “the Trustees of the Boston College.” Their South End school became the first chartered college to operate in Boston in September 1864, when twenty-two boys – with an average age of fourteen – enrolled and classes began. William Joseph Leonard, SJ was born on April 10, 1908 in Dorchester, Massachusetts, to William J. and Catherine V. (Smith) Leonard. Leonard was the oldest of five children, including two sisters, – Catherine and Eleanor – and two brothers – Francis and Robert. After attending elementary and grammar school in Dorchester, Leonard attended Boston College High School, where he graduated in 1925.
